Reiner aims to deliver strong risk-adjusted returns instead of just maximizing gains. Of course, Reiner and his colleagues, Eric Moreau and Andrew Stern, aren't complaining about their fund's 22.6% rise in 2023. It's the cherry on top of an unexpected treat, as Reiner acknowledged that he didn't anticipate what's been an outstanding rebound for growth stocks this year. "Better lucky than good — we didn't expect for the Nasdaq to go up over 30% this year," Reiner said. "It's nice that it has for our investors because it'll participate in some of the upside as well as getting really good income." The 45-year-old founder of charging company Gridserve added a high-capacity battery and solar panels to reduce the strain on the local electricity distribution network at the services off the A30 near Bodmin in Cornwall. "It works incredibly well," he said. Other businesses have been less fortunate. Martin Smith, chief executive of The Hex Group, a metals fabricator, wanted to install enough solar panels at his factory near Stafford in the West Midlands to ensure it was largely self-sufficient.
