Go ad-free with TradeBriefs Premium Teenage smokers have different brains than non-smoking teens, study suggests    A new study suggests that the brains of teenagers who take up smoking may be different from those of adolescents who don't take up the habit —  data that could help treat and prevent nicotine addiction from an early age.  A research team led by the universities of Cambridge and Warwick in Britain and Fudan University in China found that teens who started smoking cigarettes by 14 years of age had significantly less grey matter in a section of the brain's left frontal lobe.  Tuesday's findings, published in the scientific journal Nature Communications, indicate that adolescents with less grey matter on the left frontal lobe have less cognitive function and therefore are more inclined to break rules and develop bad habits such as smoking.  Continued here Confronting the dangers of ultra-processed food    WHICH IS healthier: a bag of crisps or a kale salad? Mr van Tulleken, a doctor and television presenter, draws a distinction between “ultra-processed food” (UPF) and “processed food”. Almost everything people consume is processed in some form: rice is harvested and hulled, animals are butchered. He uses a definition proposed by Carlos Monteiro, a food scientist, describing UPF as “formulations of ingredients, mostly of exclusive industrial use, made by a series of industrial processes, many requiring sophisticated equipment and technology”. A pizza made from scratch contains minimally processed food (wheat turned into flour, tomatoes into sauce, milk into cheese). The one in the freezer, with its thiamine mononitrate and sodium phosphate, is UPF. The cocktail of additives and preservatives in UPF harm people in ways both known and unknown. It seems to affect the gut microbiome, the trillions of bacteria that contribute to health in a range of ways. Calorie-rich but usually nutrient-poor, UPF contributes to obesity in part because its palatability and soft texture foster overconsumption, overriding satiety signals from the brain. What To Know About The Sold-Out Dish Cooked With Hallucinogenic Mushrooms    U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has sparked a "magic mushroom" craze in China after dining at the Yunnan restaurant chain Yi Zuo Yi Wang and eating the local jian shou qing, a dish made with hallucinogenic mushrooms that has since sold out at locations across the country. The dish she was photographed eating, which she called "delicious" and said she didn't order herself, features Lanmaoa asiatica mushrooms, known for being hallucinogenic. In an interview with CNN, Yellen said she didn't know the mushrooms had hallucinogenic properties before she ate them but that none of the people she dined with were affected by them, because "if the mushrooms are cooked properly, which I'm sure they were at this very good restaurant, that they have no impact."
